TechRec – Mobile Apps Series: Grammarly, Undo Send, & Snoozing

email-overloadAs the end of the year approaches many people are thinking about their resolutions for the new year. Becoming more efficient and productive probably tops almost everyone’s list. An easy way to help accomplish this is finding tools to help manage your deluge of daily emails. In this installment of our Mobile Apps Series we will cover three of our favorite email management apps.

Grammarly

Making sure your email message is succinct, grammatically correct, and has the right tone can take a lot of time. Grammarly is an Chrome plug-in that makes sure your emails are easy to read, mistake free and effective. The app works something like a spell-checker, analyzing and fixing over 250 types of errors and makes suggestions on how you could enhance the clarity and meaning of your message. It offers context optimized synonym suggestions and when you make a grammatical mistake, it provides information about the mistake so you can become a better writer.

Undo Send

We’ve all accidentally clicked the Send button on an email prematurely. Many email providers including Outlook, Gmail and Newton Mail have an Undo Send feature. In Outlook, go to your sent folder, double click the message you want to “undo”, click actions in the Move section at the top of the Window and select Recall this message and then Delete Unread Copies of this Message. For Gmail users, click Settings in the top right of your account and check the box “enable Undo Send. In the “send cancellation period” section, set the amount of time you want to decide if you want to un-send an email. Once this is enabled, after you send a message you will receive a popup giving you to the option to undo or view the message.

Snoozing or Scheduling

Checking your email for new messages repeatedly throughout the day is distracting and a time waster. You can opt to snooze or schedule emails to appear in your inbox in Gmail and Outlook respectively. This does nothing more than hide your email messages from your inbox until a specified time. Hiding the messages allows you to focus on important tasks without being distracted by a barrage of less important emails until a time when it’s more efficient for you to deal with them.
