TechRec – Mobile Apps Series: WhatsApp, Wire & Signal

secure-messagingAt The Launch Pad, we use messaging apps to communicate with our co-workers whether they are in the office next door or out in the field. Like texting, messaging is a quick way to quickly pass information without interrupting work flow. Following our company policy, we never message sensitive information that should be protected from cyber criminals.

Regardless of the sensitivity of the information, there is a growing consciousness about keeping personal and business related messages private. There are a number of messaging applications available that offer end to end encryption so your messages can stay between you and the people you are chatting with. Here are three of our favorites:

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is one of the most popular encrypted messaging apps available. Part of the popularity of the service, which is owned by Facebook, is there is a good chance that all of your friends and family are at least familiar with the application making it easier to get everyone on board with using the app. WhatsApp offers group texting and voice chat and unlike some other secure messaging apps, has a user friendly interface.

Wire

In addition to secure messaging, Wire offers some nifty features like doodling, image sharing and video recording. The app is tied to your phone number and set up is fairly simple. If you need assistance, a built in chat bot named Anna can offer suggestions on how to use the apps built in tools. Wire is great for one-on-one chats but isn’t a good solution if those who need secure communications with groups.

Signal

Signal, Edward Snowden’s pick for secure messaging app, allows you to communicate with groups or individuals, and can be used as your default SMS application. You can share media attachments and even make domestic and international phone calls with no long-distance charges. Signal uses your phone number and address book so there are no separate logins, usernames, passwords or PINs to manage. The app isn’t currently compatible with tablets, but support for larger screens in on the roadmap and should be available soon.
